यह विश्व भर में एक दूसरे से जुड़े हुए कम्प्यूटर नेटवर्कों का एक समूह हैं। इण्टरनेट (Internet) कनेक्शन के माध्यम से इसके सदस्य पूरे विश्व के किसी अन्य सदस्य से बातचीत कर सकते हैं
तथा सूचनाएं , जानकारियों आदि का आदान प्रदान कर सकते हैं।
इण्टरनेट के माध्यम से ऐसे अनेक कार्य , जिनकी अभी तक केवल कल्पना ही की जा सकती थी ,
उसे आसानी से घर बैठे कम समय में सम्पन्न किये जा सकते हैं।
इण्टरनेट को नेटवर्कों का नेटवर्क कहा जा सकता है।
एक देश से दूसरे देश या एक शहर से दूसरे शहर चारों ओर छोटे छोटे नेटवर्कों को आपस में जोड़ने की प्रक्रिया इण्टरनेट (Internet) कहलाती हैं।
वर्तमान में इण्टरनेट का उपयोग व्यापारी , वैज्ञानिक , बैंक , रेल्वे , विद्यार्थी , शोधकर्ता , अन्य सरकारी संस्थान आदि सभी वर्गों में बहुतायत से हो रहा है।
इसे प्रारम्भ करने के लिए निम्न सामग्रियों की आवश्यकता होती है –
1. कम्प्यूटर (पेंटीयम बेस ) , न्यूनतम 128 MB RAM सहित।
2. हार्ड डिस्क (न्यूनतम 10GB )
3. मॉडेम
4. टेलीफोन कनेक्शन या सेल्यूलर फोन
इण्टरनेट की कार्य प्रणाली :-
इण्टरनेट की कार्य प्रणाली एक ही संस्थान में या आस पास के संस्थान में उपयोग में लाये जाने वाले इन्टरकॉम की तरह कार्य करता है
जिसमें एक बड़े भवन के विभिन्न कक्षों में बैठे कर्मचारी तथा अधिकारी आपस में बातचीत कर सकते हैं।
इण्टरनेट से जब हम कोई संदेश भेजना या प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं
तो वह सर्वप्रथम कम्प्यूटर के मॉडेम से होते हुए टेलीफोन तार , फिर अन्य रेडियो तरंगों की सहायता से कम्प्यूटर के नजदीकी सर्वर तक जाता है ,
इस सर्वर के साथ उपलब्ध राउटर इसे इन्टरनेट पते के आधार पर ,
उसे उस पते के नजदीकी सर्वर को प्रेषित कर देता है , सर्वर उसे वांछित पते पर प्रेषित कर देता है।
सूचना पूर्ति सेवाएं :-
सूचना तंत्र में क्रांति के साथ ही इन्टरनेट की उपभोक्ताओं की संख्या में लगातार वृद्धि होती जा रही हैं।
इन्टरनेट के दिनों दिन बढ़ते विस्तार का श्रेय सूचना पूर्ति सेवाओं (Information retrieval service) को ही जाता है।
इनटरनेट के क्षेत्र में होने वाली वृद्धि का मुख्य कारण इन्टरनेट से मिलने वाली अधिकाधिक सूचना पूर्ति सेवाएं ही है।
ये सुप्रसिद्ध सेवाएं निम्नलिखित हैं –

www का पूरा नाम World Wide Web है।
यह विश्वव्यापी सूचना तंत्र का एक ढाँका हैं।
इसमें करोड़ों इलेक्ट्रॉनिक दस्तावेज होते हैं।
यह विश्व का सबसे बड़ा सरल एवं सदैव बढ़ने वाला डेटा बेस है , जो सूचना भेजने एवं प्राप्त करने के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Talnet –
Talnet को कई अन्य नामों से भी जाना जाता है , जैसे Remote , Login या Electronic Bulletin board आदि।
इस सेवा का प्रयोग व्यापारिक सेवाओं के लिए किया जाता है।
इसके द्वारा एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर स्थित कम्प्यूटर में कार्य किया जा सकता है।
ईमेल (E-mail) –
इन्टरनेट पर जब एक उपभोक्ता एक कम्प्यूटर से दूसरे कम्प्यूटर में पत्र भेजता है , तो इसे ई – मेल कहते हैं।
FTP –
कम्प्यूटर में स्थित फाइल को इन्टरनेट की सहायता से दूसरे उपभोक्ता के कम्प्यूटर में भेजना फाइल ट्रांसफर प्रोटोकॉल कहलाता है।
Arche –
आर्ची वह सुविधा है , जो इन्टरनेट पर किसी वांछित फाइल को खोजने में उपयोगकर्ता की मदद करता है।
बातचीत (Chatting) –
इन्टरनेट से जुड़े किसी कम्प्यूटर पर कार्य कर रहे व्यक्ति द्वारा ऐसे ही किसी दूसरे कम्प्यूटर पर कार्य कर रहे व्यक्ति के साथ बातचीत की जा सकती है।
इस सुविधा को चैटिंग (Chatting) कहा जाता है।
इसमें दोनों व्यक्ति एक ही समय एक ही वेब साइट पर लॉग इन करते हैं और
अपने संदेश अपने अपने कम्प्यूटर पर टाइप करते हैं , जो दूसरे कम्प्यूटर पर भी दिखाई पड़ता है।
